Ghana’s internet penetration has reached 70% of the population, with 24.3 million people now online, according to Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, September 3, during the launch of the 2025 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Accra.
The minister also revealed that social media adoption continues to climb sharply, with 7.95 million active accounts placing Ghana 15th in the world for social media usage.
“This growth opens tremendous doors for education, business, and innovation,” George said. “But it also exposes our citizens to serious risks online fraud, blackmail, and unauthorised access. We cannot ignore the dark side of this digital expansion.”
The minister stressed that individuals, businesses, and public institutions must all play a role in safeguarding personal and national data. He called on the media to help spread awareness and on digital platforms to prioritise user safety.
“Connectivity should not come at the cost of security,” George said. “Every new user online should mean a new person aware of the risks not a new victim.”
