After years of anticipation, Rockstar Games is preparing to launch Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) on May 26, 2026, marking one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history. Set in the expansive state of Leonida, which includes the iconic Vice City and surrounding areas like Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, and Mount Kalaga, GTA 6 promises the biggest and most immersive world in the series to date.
The game centres on two protagonists, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, whose complex relationship drives a narrative filled with romance, heartbreak, and high-stakes crime reminiscent of a modern Bonnie and Clyde story. Jason is an ex-army small-time drug smuggler, while Lucia is a fierce character with a troubled past, recently incarcerated after a violent altercation.
Rockstar has introduced several gameplay innovations to deepen immersion and realism. These include a new police system with delayed cop response and a CCTV detection mechanic, the ability to restrain NPCs, advanced car hijacking mechanics requiring tools like immobiliser bypasses, and detailed car interiors with working GPS in first-person view. Players can also choose to enter vehicles as passengers, adding new dynamics to gameplay.
While the initial map is focused on Vice City and its environs, Rockstar plans to expand the world post-launch with new cities, missions, and interior locations, ensuring the game evolves. This approach also helps manage development workload and keeps players engaged with regular content updates.
The release delay from fall 2025 to May 2026 was less than six months, and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has expressed confidence that this will be the final delay, with Rockstar known for meeting announced release dates.
GTA 6 will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC version expected later. The game’s trailers and over 70 high-quality screenshots reveal a vibrant, detailed world filled with diverse characters such as Boobie Ike, a Vice City legend, and Cal Hampton, an internet conspiracy theorist.
As the countdown to release continues, fans eagerly await more trailers and a first look at GTA 6 Online, the multiplayer component expected to build on the massive success of GTA Online from the previous generation.
