Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang has declared that Africa is poised to lead the global fight against climate change through its own initiatives following the close of the Second Africa Climate Summit.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X on Friday, September 12, 2025, the Vice President reflected on the summit’s outcome, highlighting the adoption of the Addis Ababa Declaration as a pivotal moment.

“The adoption of the Addis Ababa Declaration moves us beyond deliberation on the climate crisis to defining a new course of action,” she wrote.

“This declaration affirms Africa’s position, not as a passive victim awaiting charity, but as an active contributor in shaping sustainable solutions to global climate challenges.”

Professor Opoku-Agyemang, who attended the gathering of leaders, stated that the declaration is a clear signal of the continent’s expanding role in directing international climate efforts. She noted that the event ended with unanimous support for overhauling global financial systems and a powerful demand for climate justice.

The central goal of the Addis Ababa Declaration is to accelerate funding for green and climate-resilient development projects across Africa.

The agreement is designed to position the continent as a core part of the worldwide solution, championing the principle that strategies developed within Africa are essential for building lasting resilience and sustainable prosperity.
